The REALTOR® Trademark
Now that you’re a REALTOR®, it’s important to know how to properly use the term. The The term REALTOR® is a registered trademark strictly reserved for members of the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR). It signifies professionalism and adherence to a strict Code of Ethics. Here’s how to use it properly:
- REALTOR® ≠ Real Estate Agent: Remember, being a REALTOR® means you are a member of NAR—not just any real estate professional.
- Do NOT Modify REALTOR®: Avoid descriptive phrases like “top REALTOR®” or “local REALTOR®.” Always use it as intended.
- Preferred Format: The correct usage is REALTOR®, with the ® symbol. When the symbol isn’t available, Realtor® or REALTOR are acceptable alternatives.
- Use in Proper Context: Only refer to yourself or others as a REALTOR® if the individual is an active member of NAR.

Avoiding Risky Business
As shared at the end of your New Member Orientation, GHAR offers several different options for enforcing the REALTORS® Code of Ethics.
- An alternative to litigation is available – Mediation – through the Greater Harrisburg Association of REALTORS® Real Estate Dispute Resolution System.
- In compliance with NAR’s Statements of Professional Standards Policy, GHAR offers Ombudsman Services to members, clients, and consumers. GHAR receives and resolves Ethics Complaints which are carried out by a Grievance and a Professional Standards Committee.
- Arbitration provides a means for resolution of a business contractual dispute involving payment of money related to the real estate transaction when the parties have been unable to resolve the difference.
- GHAR receives and resolves Ethics Complaints which are carried out by a Grievance and a Professional Standards Committee. However, many complaints do not allege a violation of the Code of Ethics. Many Ethics complaints could be averted with enhanced communications and problem solving at a local level capacity with Ombudsman Services.
Advocating For Your Business
The REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) is a standing committee involved in providing funding for political candidates at the national, state and local levels.
What is a PAC? A Political Action Committee is a term for a political committee organized for the purpose of raising and spending money to elect and defeat candidates.
How will my investment be used? 100% of your RPAC investment is used to elect candidates at the local, state and national levels who understand and support REALTOR® issues.
At every level of government, your investment in RPAC is protecting your business. RPAC ensures REALTORS® have a seat at the table when legislation affecting real estate sales and property rights is introduced. Your investment ensures that RPAC can continue to support candidates for public office that support home ownership and the real estate industry.
Investing in RPAC: When you consider the impact of political decisions on your profession and on the business community as a whole, it is clear why your participation in RPAC is so important. RPAC supports members of the legislature who share REALTORS® values and viewpoints.

Supporting Our Community
The Foundation financially supports local non-profit charitable organizations with a housing and shelter-related focus! The Foundation is directly responsible for all charitable projects undertaken by the Association.
In order to raise funds the Foundation hosts a variety of events including: Trivia Night, Golf Outing, Bingo Night, Mini Golf Outing and our Back to School Drive.
One of our biggest fundraising initiatives is the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Since it’s inception in 1986 we have distributed over 21,000 meals in the greater Harrisburg area! In 2024 for our 38th year we were able to feed 1,200 families through 24 local organizations! Donations are collected throughout the year at events like our e-cycling & shredding event and at the annual meeting & trade fair.
Outside of fundraising events, the Foundation looks to give back to our community in a hands on way! Every October we celebrate REALTORS® Reach Out month, where we partner with local organizations to assist them with projects such as food distribution, painting, organizing, building and gardening. This is a great way to give back and connect with fellow members!
