32nd Annual REALTORS® Thanksgiving Food Drive

HARRISBURG, PA (Nov. 20, 2018) – Following several months of planning and several weeks of collecting, the Greater Harrisburg REALTORS® Foundation hosted its Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive Distribution Day on Nov. 16. The Foundation serves as the charitable arm of the Greater Harrisburg Association of REALTORS® (GHAR) and provides housing- related service to the community. This year is the 32nd year for the Food Drive. On Friday at the GHAR office, REALTORS® and Affiliate members distributed 900 turkeys and Karns Foods gift cards to organizations in the greater Harrisburg community.

Contributions have been collected by member REALTOR® firms and Affiliate firms throughout the fall. The contributions were designed to provide a complete Thanksgiving dinner, including turkey and trimmings, for a less fortunate family.

Thanks to the generosity of REALTORS® and Affiliate members, the Foundation was able to distribute turkeys and gift cards to feed 900 greater Harrisburg area families.

Karen Detwiler, Thanksgiving Food Drive Chair, is astounded by the fact that people are still facing food insecurity in the United States and it is happening right here in our community. “The need out there is overwhelming. We had requests for 2,870 turkeys and gift cards. This year, we were able to provide 900. Our goal was 1,000, but we are happy with 900 because we were still able to provide 95 more meals this year in comparison to 2017”.

Two dozen organizations picked up the gift cards and turkeys to distribute them to less fortunate families, NE Fire & Rescue 2; New Beginnings International; Zion Lutheran Church; Cumberland County Children and Youth; Way of the Cross Church of the Living God; The Salvation Army – Harrisburg Capital Region; True Deliverance Holiness Church of God; Perry County Food Bank; Loaves of Love 2nd City Church; New Hope Ministries – Mechanicsburg; Bethuel Temple Church of Christ Apostolic; First Zion Baptist Church; Fountain Gate Church and Ministries; Neighborhood Center of the United Methodist Church; The New Hope Living Baptist Church; Harrisburg Housing Authority; Antioch Tabernacle; Millennium Neighborhood Church; Upper Dauphin Human Services; City of Refuge; Martin Luther King Baptist Church; New Hope Ministries – Dillsburg; Gaudenzia DELTA Community and Hummelstown Ministries.

“The organizations that benefit from this are so appreciative of what we do. It is very heartwarming to provide the turkeys and feel their gratitude when they come through for pick up”, Karen Detwiler added.

GHAR wishes to give a special thank you to Karns Food for assisting with the turkeys and the gift cards for the Food Drive.

In addition to the generous contributions from REALTORS® and Affiliate member firms, thank you to our Food Drive sponsors: A Plus Mortgage Solutions, Inc.; Fidelis Mortgage Corporation; Fulton Mortgage Company; Geo.
